Spielen&مشي / Walk&Play (2012)

A silent walk devised for PVA’s AudioLab Language of Place.

An hour long walk to Rampisham Down, where the BBC world service transmitters still stand but no longer work. The last two transmissions from the site, before the station went silent last year, were in Arabic and German, two languages I grew up with and can understand but cannot speak. They are also languages of wars - one from a long time ago and the other taking place a long way away. The title is made of the word Mashi, which means walking in Arabic and Spielen which means playing in German. A dice dictated when to stop and offer participants a ‘did you know card?’
