The Lines That Move Us - A Sketch (2023). floor installation.
The taped floor work shows European borders from different centuries. It becomes clear that borders and territorial claims, as well as traditional history, are merely constructed structures that have never 'always been' as they are today. As a floor installation, the work connects both the other works in the exhibition with each other and the visitors with the artworks. We move flexibly back and forth between past and present borders while looking at it, and can thus constantly reconsider our current and future point of view. (Text by Manya Gramsch for Speaking in Someone Else's Language exhibition at MOM Artspace, Hamburg)
The map used to create the work depicts the institution of borders across Europe since 1143 was transported onto the gallery floor. The work reminds us that 'defined borders are a relatively new concept in many parts of the world. In fact, until the latter half of the 20th century, most of the world was still wide open territory with loosely or completely undefined borders. On the European continent, however, jurisdiction over territory has been a fact of life for thousands of years'.
